Year 6
Autumn Term Highlights!
Year 6 have thoroughly enjoyed learning about World War Two this term. We began our learning by looking at the events that led up to WWII and starting to read the novel, 'Goodnight Mr Tom'. This story helped us to understand the enorminity of children being evacuated and we wrote diaries as if we had been sent away to live with another family in the coutryside. We learnt about different types of shelter used and created information pages about them. We discussed what 'rationing' was and wrote food diaries to compare how we eat now to how people would've eaten during WWII. Following this, we studied posters of the time and learned about propaganda. Some posters we looked at were encouraging women to join the work force while the men were away at war. We even got to design our own posters that could have been used to influence women to sign up! Other posters we learnt about were used in Germany to influence people to think badly of Jewish people. Linked to this, we learnt about Hitler's hatred of Jews and how this eventually led to the awful events that occured during the Holocaust. We enjoyed learning about Anne Frank and read parts of her diary and admired her positivity. We then wrote her story in our own words. Lots of us also really enjoyed learning about the different battles that took place and the aeroplanes and machinery that was vital to the war effort. We even got to write newspaper reports about The Blitz! We have truly loved this learning journey and will always be thankful to those who faught for us!
